happiness of freebies

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

OleHappiness is waking up in the wee hours of the morning, watching your team crush your opponents with flair and having fun doing it. It’s also seeing one of your favourite players score his first goal during the last 3-injury-riddled year.

I believe it’s necessary to make public that my loyalty lies with those who give me freebies. Even though the one who gave me a polo shirt this morning is the competitor of the account I manage. What a cheap bastard, eh? :)

the historian covered

Monday, August 21st, 2006

I’m proud to say that I finally finished reading Kostova’s The Historian after several months. It’s not that it’s that hard to read, but I’m the one who didn’t have enough time to do it. So, it’s only fitting that I completed it during the 5-day holiday.

The novel was quite a heavyweight in terms of the number of pages and the topic. But, it’s worth the time & effort even though the ending might be a bit disappointing considering all the build-up to the climax. One caution is that you must immerse yourself thoroughly in the adventure or you might get lost somewhere in a cloudy castle in the medieaval time.

I also couldn’t help thinking that reading this novel was like watching an episode of Samantha Brown travelling in Eastern European countries. And sometimes I think that it’s too much as impatient readers might give up the book when the clue provided only lead us to yet another clue in another country. But I had to admit that Ms. Kostova really had a way with words. She could describe a simple event into more than 10 lines worth of words. My almamater might want to contact her if she’s willing to teach Paraphrasing to the clueless.

In overall, if you like history, vampires, travelling, & adventure, The Historian is a good company for you.

shattered sky

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Just when we thought the sky was safe to fly again, the news came in and shattered our fragile sense of security all over once more. I just don’t get it why those bastards would do such thing. I don’t care if it’s for religions, countries, beliefs, or individuals. If you want to die, just die alone and let us be. Fucking cowards.

silly lady

LadyinthewaterIt wasn’t a crime if I went for Lady in The Water expecting the same bizarre, unpredictable twist at the end of the movie as seen in other M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. However, was it a crime if this time the twist was nowhere to be found until the end credit rolled? Has the talented director lost it?

It turned out to be a fairy tale, literally speaking. A fairy tale that your mother or grandmother normally wouldn’t tell you to whisk you away to Sleepyland. It was the ultimate twist in the movie, the kind of fairy tale that only the director could imagine. And I wonder if he told this story to put his kids to bed.

Actually, the movie was quite silly and very predictable even though it tried to fool the audience with numerous false clues. It couldn’t fool me, and I was happily curious to see what happened to the assembled myriad of characters in this fairy tale. It was silly but quite enjoyable.

So, I exited the theatre with several questions. The prominent ones were: Was I the only one who kept seeing Homer Simpson in my head whenever Paul Giamatti appeared on the screen? and Did Bryce Dallas Howard catch pneumonia while shooting the movie?

You know where to find me if you have the answers.

I love you because you’re willing to wake up early in the morning and go eat noodle with me.

venomous villains

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Venom_1Spidey 3 seems certain to be the biggest Spidey movie ever by having an all-star cast of villains. We all know that Sandman will be the primary baddie, but then with 2nd Green Goblin and The Lizard tantalizingly introduced in Spidey 2, we expect the three of them teaming up to kick Spidey’s ass. But then, another one comes out of nowhere…Venom.

All hell breaks loose…5 April 2007 can’t seem to come soon enough.

On another subject, Heath Ledger is signed to be the Joker in the next Batman movie after Batman Begins…Gay cowboy as a maniacal badass? He’d better show us that patented smile first.
