this park is ours

ParkUnited cruised to a 3-0 win over Beijing Hyundai in their second match of the Asia Tour. This time, a brace from Scholesy and a header from Park Ji-Sung settled the matter. I was thoroughly pleased with Park’s performance, he linked up quite well with Ruud & Wazza in a Scholeseque position. All he needs is just more practice with the strikers and he should be alright.

However, what I like the most from him was his hustle & bustle attitude that showed his commitment to the United cause. We, as the supporters, always love that type of players who wore their hearts on the sleeves and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in the bloodiest tackles right away. We’ve had it in Keano, and hopefully now Gaby, Smudger, & Park could inject the hunger & passion that would see us lift the silverwares in May.

The company had just won a new account, and the boss asked me to manage that account. The things that I hate from it are the location of their office which is so far away from us, and the fact that I used to hate some smugs (who thought they’re the coolest motherfuckers with all the gadgets hanging from their belt) there from the time when their old office used to be one floor below my old workplace. Those smugs may/may not still be working there and I keep my fingers crossed that I don’t have to deal with them during the project.

secrets

OfficesI came across PostSecret while I was at Nate’s blog. Since then, I was hooked instantly at those personal secrets that people wrote anonymously on their homemade postcards and mailed to blogger Frank Warren of Germanland, Maryland. The idea itself is brilliant, and the secrets are funny, sad, and even weird which are really appealing to me. Later, I found out that the blog was one of TIME’s 50 Coolest Websites 2005 in blog category. Hats off to Frank and his blog, they deserve all the accolades.

I’ve uploaded one of the examples here, if you like what you see and want more just go directly to PostSecret

The day will come

when we shall fly

To the constellation starlight

where lights will be upon us

casting away the shadows

and all of our fears

heartkeeper

No, I don’t want that tiny piece of my heart that you put away somewhere. Just keep it coz I don’t want it back. It’s been with you for 13 years, and it should stay that way forever.

I read bad poetry
into your machine.
I save your messages
just to hear your voice.
you always listen carefully
to awkward rhymes.
you always say your name,
like I wouldn’t know it’s you,
at your most beautiful

living

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

To live is surviving from being constantly compared to other more successful persons and always trying to prove other people are wrong about you.

I don’t think I ever choose to live a life like that.

Potter_6Warning: The following post contains possible spoilers to Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. If you haven’t read the book, and don’t like people telling you what’s in the book, it’s advisable for you not to read this post. You’ve been warned.

Harry Potter fans all around the world eagerly awaited 16 July to come round, and I’m not that different. Actually, I wanted to be the first standing in front of Kinokuniya when they opened the door but common sense finally prevailed. "What’s the use of pre-ordering then?" So, I finally laid my hands on Potter 6 around 4 o’clock and got myself the Scholastic cover. Firstly, I wanted to change it with the Bloomsbury one because I think it’s better and my Potter 5 was also in Bloomsbury. However, finally I decided on the Scholastic after some grumbling from the wife.

The hype surrounding the book launch here was not about the story in the newest installment but centered more on which bookstore offered cheaper price for the pre-order. While passing some major bookstores on my way to Kinokuniya, I was quite disappointed to find that they’re able to sell the book at Rp. 180,000 even though it’s only a two-day offer. It meant that I paid Rp. 40,000 more than I should and it also meant that no more pre-ordering Harry Potter for me. I’d just wait and see for the lowest price.

I was only able to start reading around 10 PM after watching Fantastic Four and some delicious Korean dinner at Bee Bim Bab. In Potter 5, the first pages directly gripped your attention and wouldn’t let you go so you felt like you must finished the whole book in one reading or died from curiosity. But in Potter 6, the story went quite slow and going back & forth to the previous events in Potter 5 that were rather confusing if you hadn’t read Potter 5 or just simply forgot what happened then.

After that, the story started to lead somewhere and bit by bit, Rowling told us what she wanted Harry to do in this 6th book together with Dumbledore. Basically, they were trying to figure out Voldemort’s past in order to find out his weaknesses. They managed to find that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was smarter than ever and in order to keep himself immortal, Voldemort allegedly divided his souls in 7 Horcruxes that were secretly hidden and Dumbledore assumed if they managed to find and destroyed them, it’d be much easier to confront Voldemort.

Their quest to find the Horcruxes was weaved between Harry finally got a girl (no, it’s not Cho Chang nor Hermione), detention, Quidditch, Ron & Hermione bickering, Draco Malfoy (who started to get meaningful part), and excessive use of the Pensieve. The pains of growing up got a bigger portion here and sometimes it felt like a page out of Mary-Kate & Ashley novels which were quite annoying. You can skip the puppy love part aside and fast forward to the climax where Dumbledore was finally killed by someone who had his trust all these years.

Personally, it’s quite disappointing to see Dumbledore’s demise this way because ever since Snape’s character appeared in the series, it’s easy to guess that one day he’ll turn bad. Heck, it only took half of the book for us to finally find out where Severus really stood. No surprises here, even though you’d probably wish a different outcome when you arrived at the said event.

The good thing about Potter 6 is that it’s less violent than Potter 5 and truly become a good read for teenagers & children because there are lots of things from Harry & Friends that they can relate their lives with. But don’t let what I said about the book kept you from reading it. You’d miss a portion of your life if you miss the whole series. It’d be like missing your prom dance, or not experiencing your first kiss in high school.

The big questions that linger to be answered in 2-year time would be:

  • The fate of Hogwarts without Dumbledore
  • Will Harry finish his last year at Hogwarts?
  • Harry’s continuing quest to find the Horcruxes
  • Will we finally see a closure between Ron & Hermione?
  • Harry’s love life
  • Will Voldemort finally return physically?

Those are quite a lot of questions to be answered in one book, considering Rowling promised that the series will end in Book 7. I wish the next book will be thicker than the last one. So, when it’s finally published we can savour every page as it’s the last. But then, 2 years is such a long time to wait. Oh, the agony!

blue devils

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Finally, I’ve completed the manual point calculations for a client’s program. After about 2 weeks being constantly haunted by it, at least I could take a deep breath and sit back a little bit. All that’s left to do should be a minor fix here and there. I guess I only have about 1 day to relax before the redemption period rolls over. More headaches!!

Blue_devilsUnited starts previewing the new blue away kit, before offically launches it on 2 August. The lads will be wearing it during the Asia Tour starting next week in Hong Kong. A very well-timed plan to make the Glazers richer. First impression, I don’t really think the kit is good. The red on the sleeves/shoulder make it bad, and why the V neck??? Arggh…While the players will be feeling blue, Van der Sar and Timmy will be seeing green which reminisces of the one that Schmikes wore during the Treble season.

All in all, I prefer the all blue kit just like the one I have (it now has SMITH 14 on it), it’s my favourite along with the Centenary Kit. Hopefully, Nike could come up with better design next time.

jerk

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

Some said that I was a rude, sarcastic jerk whenever I opened my mouth. I can’t help it. Life made me that way. I guess I’d better keep my mouth shut then. But, I can still be a rude, sarcastic jerk with my mouth shut. You just can’t change me.

My sympathy goes to all the families in London whose close ones are among the victims of those inhumane bombings. May God bless them with people or things to comfort them during their grievings. Would I ask God to bring thunder & lightning to those responsible behind the attacks? I stop short of that, but won’t mind if the Almighty eventually does that.

The sarcastic jerk in me comes up with "To show sympathy with the event, there’ll be another wristband created so it’ll become another sickening fad in this wristband-infested world. Don’t we have ENOUGH of it???"

See? I’m a jerk.

please stop, please…

One fateful wrong turn is all it takes

A 2-hour traffic jam

Inferiority

Demands

Headaches

Unfair comparison

Us against the world

And inevitably, money

Lord, when will it finally stop?

loyalty of a scouser

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

Gerrard_1I never thought that I would be writing about Steven Gerrard in my blog. I mean a Red through and through like me has no business about a Scouser who supports Liverpool since a kid, and also happens to be their best player on the field. But I’m writing it now and it’s about his decision to quit his club 41 days after leading them to their 5th European Cup title in Istanbul in a magical game that ranks as high as our own Barcelona 1999. After winning the Cup, Gerrard spoke on how he could leave the club when things went well like that.

Fast forward to 41 days later, and the same guy turned down the contract extension that would make him the highest paid player in Liverpool’s history. I think Liverpool fans are not the only ones who scratch their heads in disbelief, but also every football fans in the world. We’re all asking the same thing: Loyalty, does it still have any meaning in the world consisting of the Glazers & Abramovichs?

In United case, we’ve experienced the aforementioned case as the beneficiary when Rooney & Smudger leave their boyhood clubs to be with us. But I can’t imagine, or even dare not to dream if the Nevilles, or Keano leave us for more money in other clubs. Aside from Butt or Becks who both left for other reasons, I don’t think we’ve ever had any player who’s willingly change the red & white for other colors.

Football has really changed now, it’s not merely a game. The business side has become more & more powerful, and money has more to say than passion, and sadly loyalty.

The bidding war has officially started now, and Blue seems to be the favoured color to win Gerrard. However, I won’t mind if he still sees Red but this time the Red color of Manchester.

Latest Update: Gerrard apparently had a change of heart, and decided to stay at Anfield instead. Read the complete story here. So, the knives are no longer out in the Red side of Merseyside.
